Sunset Video, 11 March

No clouds today, but the nicest sunset this week, anyway.

Weather 8 March, 2015 (with video)

So, as posted earlier, the weather this day was dominated by “Calima“.
In the first half of the day the haze was so dense, it looked almost like overcast. In the afternoon it cleared up slightly, and we had a blue sky.
It was very windy all day; it started just a few minutes after midnight, and the strongests winds were between 3 and 6 am, with gusts up to 21 m/s (75 kph, or 47 mph), but it continued with strong winds all day, and we still have gusts up to around 10 m/s now at 9 pm when I write this.
The temperatures has been by far the highest this year, reaching 24.8 °C just before 2 pm. (My regular termometer outside in the shade showed over 27 °C, but I suppose I have to trust the calibrated termometer in the weather station, ideally situated away from heat reflecting surfaces, in a specially designed aspirated radiation shield.)
Now at 9 pm, it’s still about 20 °C.
Humidity has been extremely low, down to only 17% Relative Humidity for a while, and stayed below 20 for most of the day. Now in the evening it’s slowly rising again, with 25% now at 9 pm.
I fee it’s very dry, getting dry hands and feel it in my trhouat and nose, and my lips gets dry too.

Sunset Video, 8 March

So, here comes another sunset video.
The weather today was dominated by “Calima” (see other posts), and was clear but hazy.
I had hoped for a nice sunset, but them most spectacualar ones require some clouds, not just haze.

Calima!

Well, as I wrote last night, “Calima” was coming…
And it did. A bit past midnight it was getting windy, the temperature went up, and the humidity dropped significantly.
We have been getting wind gusts up to 21 m/s (75 kph, or 47 mph), and the relative humidity dropped to a mere 17%.
Temperature stayed over 20 °C all night, and when I write this is 22.8 °C.

It’s extremely hazy – earlier it looked almost like overcast, but it’s not – and the dust and dry air makes me cough. It’s unusually strong Calima, this time.
Below is a picture towards Teide, taken a few minutes ago by my weather camera. It’s haze and dust, not overcast. Now the sun occasionally shines through it.

Weather 7 March, 2015 (with video)

Well, today was a rather grey day, but mild.
The humidity was high during the day, around 90% relative humidity, but now in the evening it has dropped to much lower than normal – right now when I look at it, my weather station says 34%, which is extremely low for being here. Normal is around 70%, and it almost never goes below 60%. The temperature which usually drops significantly in the evening didn’t drop below 18 °C, and now it’s increasing again, and just passed 19 °C, increasing with a 10th of a degree every minute or so for the last few minutes.
But this is obviously a case of “Calima” – hot, dusty air coming from the Sahara desert. It happens once in a while, more common in the summer, but happens now in winter too.
In winter it usually means cloudy weather, since the dust acts as condensation nuclei in the humid air. In the summer it usually means it’s quite hazy, but here in the north of Tenerife it’s usually not so much dust so you get troubled by it, unless you are very sensitive.
“Calima” is also often accomanied by strong winds, but right now it’s almost calm. But the forcast for tomorrow afternoon is for stronger winds, up to 70 km/h (about 20 m/s, or 44 mph). Not that bad, though.
